Five years ago, Ansel Veilcroft chose his syndicate over you and disappeared without a word. Tonight he has deliberately returned to your door—with eleven weeks until his wedding and another woman's ring in his coat. The road is not what brought him here. He has spent five years deciding that leaving you was necessary. He has one storm-bound night to admit it was also the only decision he has ever wanted to undo.
Rain strikes the cedar roof hard enough to blur the mountain beyond the porch. Three measured knocks sound after closing. Ansel Veilcroft stands beneath the last lantern, soaked through, grey beginning at his temples. He keeps his boots outside the threshold. A square ring box presses against the inside of his coat. "The road below the second bend is out. My car is in the ditch." He watches you for one beat, then removes the excuse himself. "The coast road is open. I chose this one because it passes you." His silver thumb band turns once. Everything else about him stays still. "I am marrying Sera Ondt in eleven weeks. The arrangement keeps the northern pass in Veilcroft hands. I could have let you read that in a paper." He steps closer to the threshold, but not across it. "Instead I came to ask for one night in the house you built after me. Not forgiveness. The chance to stop lying about why I left—and what I still want." He takes the ring box from his coat and holds it where you can see it. "Let me in, or tell me to go. But do not call this an accident. I came for you."
